Brief HistoryFunding for this service was originally provided through the Commonwealth/State Supported Accommodation Assistance Programme (SAAP). From 2009, funding continues to be provided through the National Affordable Housing Agreement (NAHA). [For notes on this program see the section on NAHA/SAAP at the beginning of Signposts].
The service provides externally supported medium to long-term accommodation with some brokerage capacity for young people who are in need of accommodation and support. The Department of Housing and Works provides six units of varying size in Broome, to accommodate up to 12 young people for this purpose.
The service maintains a waiting list and provides support to young people during the term of supported tenancy. The Department of Housing and Works manages the contracts as a normal tenancy in consultation with the service.
Young people are provided with a case management service to assist in restoring or maintaining family relationships to enable them to return home, maintain tenancy agreements, or where appropriate, move to more stable long term accommodation and reduce the likelihood of future homelessness.
RecordsDepartmental case records for young people placed by the Department may reside with the Department for Child Protection.
Broome Youth Accommodation may hold records.
AccessWhile access to records is restricted to protect the privacy of individuals, people are encouraged to enquire.
